Making an advent calendar with your child is a brilliant way to help them deal with the excitement and anticipation of waiting for Christmas. I’m sure you can remember how it felt when you were a child in the run up to Christmas Day. It couldn’t come soon enough for me and my sister!

Providing your child with a visual aid to count down the days, will help to show them how much time they have left to wait before Santa arrives with their presents. This year we have been busy making Christmas Tree Advent Calendars with a fun sibling twist.

Over here at Crafty Kids at Home we are all about getting all of your kids involved in the same arts and crafts activity. We are all busy parents and care givers and we don’t always have the time to set up a different activity for each of our children. With a bit of careful planning and tweaking, it is possible to adapt many different activities to make them suitable to do with all of your children together. When planning our DIY Advent Calendars this year, this was very much at the forefront of my mind. So together with my 6 and 8 year sons, we came up with a great idea for a project that they could work on not only together, but also for each other.

Last year all three of my children got involved in making these quirky Bubble Wrap Salt Dough Christmas Tree Decorations.

How to make DIY Christmas Tree Advent Calendars

Instead of making an advent calendar for themselves, we decided it would be more fun for the boys to make one for each other. That way the pictures and messages behind the doors would be a nice surprise each morning for both of them. This also provided a great way continue with teaching the boys about the importance of giving to others at Christmas and being thankful and appreciative of what they themselves receive from others.

We began by drawing outlines for the Christmas Trees with pencil before painting (Liam) and colouring (Freddie) each tree.

The boys were then sent to opposite end of the the room to add on their stickers, pictures and messages to the 24 white circles of paper which I had prepared for them earlier.

My 8 year old son Liam has some very interesting activities for his brother to complete…

Freddie (6) was a little more traditional and put pictures behind his doors using some cheap stickers that I picked up when I was out grocery shopping.

We then glued 24 coloured circles of paper over the pictures and messages and added on numbers to the “baubles” to finish them off.

They are all ready and waiting now for December 1st to arrive and then they can start on their Christmas Countdown.
