In this case a scarecrow collage.\u00a0You can find links to all of the posts included at the bottom of this page.<\/p>\n<h2>How to make a Scarecrow Collage<\/h2>\n<h3>Supplies<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Long sheet of paper<\/li>\n<li>Paper bag<\/li>\n<li>Coloured paper<\/li>\n<li>Paper plate<\/li>\n<li>Wool<\/li>\n<li>Buttons<\/li>\n<li>Popsicle sticks<\/li>\n<li>Clothes pegs<\/li>\n<li>Marker pens<\/li>\n<li>Glue<\/li>\n<li>Tape measure<\/li>\n<li>Notebook and pen<a href=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/making-a-scarecrow-collage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/making-a-scarecrow-collage.jpg\" alt=\"How to make a scarecrow collage\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/making-a-scarecrow-collage.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/making-a-scarecrow-collage-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/making-a-scarecrow-collage-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/making-a-scarecrow-collage-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Draw and cut out a hat shape from your coloured paper.<\/li>\n<li>Glue wool onto the back of the hat for the scarecrows hair.<\/li>\n<li>Decorate the paper plate with the pens to make the scarecrows face.<\/li>\n<li>Use the paper bag to draw and cut out his jacket.<\/li>\n<li>Clip a clothes peg onto each sleeve before gluing the jacket down onto the paper.<\/li>\n<li>Glue on the paper plate face and hat.<\/li>\n<li>Finish off your scarecrow with a popsicle stick at the bottom of his jacket.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I then used the finished scarecrow to demonstrate to Liam, which dimensions were his height and then which were his width.<\/p>\n<h2>Estimating<\/h2>\n<p>The first step in our measuring activity was to estimate how many cm high and how many cm wide the scarecrow was.<\/p>\n<p><em>Estimating the answer first is important because it encourages your child to think through the problem in their head, before working out the accurate answer. This helps children to develop good problem solving skills, which will become very important in their adult life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Liam used his fingertips (which are approx 1cm wide) to count along the height and width of the scarecrow to estimate the answers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-estimating.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3465 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-estimating.jpg\" alt=\"Scarecrow art project to work on ,measuring\" width=\"600\" height=\"725\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-estimating.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-estimating-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Liam estimated that the scarecrow&#8217;s width was 65 cm and his height was 75cm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Measuring<\/h2>\n<p>We then took the tape measure and with a little help from his younger brother, they first measured the height of the scarecrow and then the width.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-measuring.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3464 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-measuring.jpg\" alt=\"measuring a scarecrow art project\" width=\"600\" height=\"1132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-measuring.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-measuring-159x300.jpg 159w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/scarecrow-collage-measuring-543x1024.jpg 543w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The correct width of the scarecrow was 41 cm and the height was 73 cm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Follow our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/Multicraftmum\/autumn-arts-and-crafts-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Autumn Arts and Crafts <\/a>board over on Pinterest.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusions<\/h2>\n<p>Liam wasn&#8217;t too far out with his estimation of the scarecrow&#8217;s height, but he was way out with his estimation for his width. We then discussed why this could be the case.<\/p>\n<p>We concluded that he must not have counted across the scarecrow in a straight line as his number was much higher.
