We decided that\u00a0Valentine&#8217;s hearts were just what we needed to cheer up our tree (and our Winter blues).<\/p>\n<h2>Supplies<\/h2>\n<p><em>This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div><strong>For the Salt Dough<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>2 cups of flour<\/li>\n<li>1 cup of salt<\/li>\n<li>1 cup of warm water<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hLqyFd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Food Colouring<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iBKCex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Baking Trays<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Baking Paper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To make the Bubble Wrap Heart Decorations for kids<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bubble Wrap<\/li>\n<li>Rolling Pin<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iwkyPJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Heart shaped cutter<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iXS00w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gloss Modge Podge<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Glitter<\/li>\n<li>String<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4584 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hearts-1.jpg\" alt=\"bubble wrap activities for kids valentines hearts \" width=\"600\" height=\"663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hearts-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/hearts-1-271x300.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How to make Perfect Salt Dough<\/h2>\n<p>Measure the flour and salt out into a mixing bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Before adding the water to the bowl, add the food colouring to the water and give it a good swish around. <em>We made two batches and coloured the first pink and the second purple.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gradually add in the water and mix all the ingredients together until they form a soft ball of dough. I find using an electric mixer is a really effective way to bind the ingredients together.<\/p>\n<p><em>Be careful not to add the water in too fast<\/em> or you will make the dough too sticky, if your hand does slip then just add in a bit more flour to balance it out.<\/p>\n<p>Give the ball of dough a really good knead with your hands for a few minutes. This really helps to improve to texture of the dough and increase the intensity and evenness of the colouring.<br \/>\n<script src=\"\/\/z-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/onejs?MarketPlace=US&#038;adInstanceId=e7b605a8-c3ec-41c5-8829-0c96ecb4d4dc&#038;storeId=crakid0c-20\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Bubble Wrap Heart Decorations for Kids<\/h2>\n<p>I placed the two balls of dough down onto our kitchen table, \u00a0along with sheets of bubble wrap, heart cutters and rolling pins.<\/p>\n<p>Bella and Freddie both made a grab for the purple dough (why did I give them a choice of colours?) so after stepping in\u00a0to referee, we were ready to get rolling our salt dough out.<\/p>\n<p>They each rolled out their dough (Freddie purple and Bella pink). Then I showed them how to press down the bubble wrap firmly into their salt dough to transfer the bubble pattern into it. This resulted in heavy fists banging down into the dough to see who could get the best bubble pattenr (why does everything have to be a competition?) before\u00a0peeling the bubble wrap back.<\/p>\n<p>I managed to calm the situation (I awarded a tie break) and we moved onto cutting our hearts out using the heart cutters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4585 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bubble-wrap-hearts-collage.jpg\" alt=\"bubble wrap activities for kids valentines hearts \" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bubble-wrap-hearts-collage.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bubble-wrap-hearts-collage-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bubble-wrap-hearts-collage-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/bubble-wrap-hearts-collage-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I transferred these over to a baking tray lined with baking paper (to stop them from sticking) and before placing them into the oven (pre-heated to a low\u00a0110C). We used a chopstick to make a small hole towards the top of the heart (to thread the string through once baked).<\/p>\n<p>Keep a close eye on the salt dough hearts as you cook them, you don&#8217;t want to spoil the colouring on them by over cooking them.
