Bake Cookies and make Gift Tags with your kids. Give to your friends and family this Christmas.

We enjoy making and baking together all through the year. But there is something special about sitting down together to prepare for Christmas. We have already made a start on our Christmas Cards and made a few new Baubles for our Christmas Tree.

Now ‘s time to start thinking about our Christmas baking priorities (we HAVE to make a Gingerbread House this year!) and our DIY Christmas Gifts. This year we are planning to give DIY Christmas Cookie Decorating Kits, so we gave them a test run just to make sure they were going to be yummy enough.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.

Baking can go one of two ways in our house. All the kids behave beautifully taking turns to do each job or it descends into chaos when I can’t remember whose turn it is to crack the eggs! Not be deterred though, I persevere as baking is such an important skill to teach your kids (and a firm favorite from my own childhood). And any arugments are soon forgotten once they are all tucking into the tasty treats at the end of the session.

Thankfully this session ran really well. I moved down to the kitchen table with them, where we had lots of room to spread out, rather than all cramming around the counter top.

Ingredients

I prepared the cookie dough, so all the kids had to do today was concentrate on rolling out the cookie dough and cutting out the cookies. This recipe makes lots of dough, so they all got to have a turn at each job, which always helps to maintain peace and harmony.

I popped the trays of cookies into a hot oven (pre-heat to 190C/GM5) for 8-10 minutes. Then left them to cool on a wire rack.

Whilst the cookies cooked and then cooled, we made some home-made gift tags to put on the finished Christmas Cookie gifts next month. One of our favourite ways to make lots of gift tags is to stamp Christmas Cookie Cutters in paint and print them over white paper. Liam took charge of this job and then his siblings joined him in cutting them out and sticking them onto squares of brown parcel paper, once they were dry. All I had to do then was punch a hole into the top and attach a piece of shiny string for tying onto the gift bag.

This technique works really well for a big batch of Christmas Cards for the Class as well.

We then of course had to test out decorating the cookies and eating them. Well we wouldn’t want to give a gift tag we wouldn’t be happy to receive.

When we package up our Cookie Gifts with fresh supplies in December, we will add in a little icing pen and a small box of smarties for decorating.

For more DIY Gift Ideas for kids to make check out the full series over on Teach Me Mommy.

Baking Christmas Cookies
