To help make this a bit more interesting for her, I have been setting up themed CVC Word Activities for her to play with after her post-school snack \u00a0(attempt homework on an empty stomach at your peril!).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/dr-seuss-activities-crafts-for-kids\/\">Dr Seuss Day<\/a> is coming up, so we decided on a<em> Cat in the Hat<\/em> theme for one of our homework helping activities this week. We couldn&#8217;t resist adding in Thing 1 and Thing 2 as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Cat in the Hat CVC Word Building<\/h2>\n<p><em>This post contains affiliate links for your convenience<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Supplies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tray<\/li>\n<li>Red and White Rice<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2lPal2x\">Popsicle Sticks<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2lhdtSU\">Googly Eyes<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2mwWlud\">Blue Feathers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Black Marker<\/li>\n<li>Red and White Paper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7406\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cat-in-the-Hat-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cat in the Hat Dr Seuss themed Sensory Tray\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cat-in-the-Hat-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cat-in-the-Hat-1-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ahead of the Activity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I placed rice into two separate<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2lhrS12\"> zip-loc bags<\/a>. Adding red paint to one and white paint to the other. I shook the bags until all of the rice was covered in paint and then poured it onto a tray to dry.<\/p>\n<p>I made Thing 1 and Thing 2 by simply attaching a blue feather and two googly eyes to red popsicle sticks. And finished off their faces with a black marker pen.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I wrote out the letters we were practicing onto red (consonants) \u00a0and white (vowels) \u00a0paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eepurl.com\/cCGR5v\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7357\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/E-S-T-.-1-9-6-1.jpg\" alt=\"Free eBook 25+ Kids Painting Ideas\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Building and Decoding CVC Words<\/h2>\n<p>We took out Bella&#8217;s weekly CVC Word List and started at the top, building H-O-P by stacking the red and white letter cards in the shape of the Cat&#8217;s Hat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7408\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cat-in-the-Hat-3.jpg\" alt=\"Building and decoding CVC words\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cat-in-the-Hat-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Cat-in-the-Hat-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was then time to decode the word with a little help from Thing 1 and Thing 2.
