Plus a list of yummy food to make over the festive period.<\/p>\n<p>Trifle is top of my list for Christmas desserts.\u00a0\u00a0My Mum or Granny always make a trifle over Christmas and this is a tradition I definitely want to carry on with my own kids.\u00a0\u00a0Who can resist those lovely layers of cream, custard and jelly, along with the delicate sponge and chunks of fruit? We always had to have sprinkles on the top as well.<\/p>\n<p>We had great fun with a <a href=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/pretend-baking-for-toddlers\/\">Pretend Cupcake Baking Activity<\/a>\u00a0recently using water-beads and shaving foam. This set me thinking about how we could use these ingredients again, \u00a0but this time to make a trifle for Bella and her friend to play with.<\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<h2>Christmas Trifle Messy Play<\/h2>\n<p><em>At no point should any of the ingredients in this trifle be put into your mouth and\/or eaten.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before Bella\u2019s friend arrived to play, she helped me to make the very messy trifle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red, \u00a0Green and Yellow Water-Beads.<\/li>\n<li>Shaving Foam<\/li>\n<li>Glitter<\/li>\n<li>A selection of small objects to hide inside the trifle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to make a Sensory Trifle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bella scooped the red and green water-beads into the bottom of a large clear glass\u00a0bowl to form the layer of jelly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/collage12.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"231\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0then added in a layer of yellow water-beads to create a layer of custard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/collage23.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"181\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0this point we added \u00a0a selection of red and green, objects which\u00a0later would form part of the playing part of the activity. We used buttons, pretend coins, marbles, plastic paperclips, beads, lego bricks\u00a0and bells.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/collage33.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Finally I squirted a layer of shaving foam \u201ccream\u201d over the water-beads and Bella sprinkled lots of glitter on the top to finish it off nicely.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/collage43.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"387\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nWhen Bella\u2019s friend had arrived and settled in, we popped on their aprons and pulled up their sleeves. Then sat them alongside each other before placing \u00a0the trifle down in front of them.<strong> I explained that this trifle was only for playing with and not for eating.<\/strong> They looked a tad disappointed at this ,but with a little encouragement they tentatively placed their hands into the bowl and started to explore the different textures.<\/p>\n<p><em>This activity should not be done with toddlers who are still at the stage of placing everything they encounter into their mouths first.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Hide and Seek Christmas Trifle Play<\/h2>\n<p>I explained the next part of the activity, which was to find the hidden objects \u00a0in the trifle.<\/p>\n<p>Bella\u2019s friend did really well with this, \u00a0but she seemed happier plunging her hands into the trifle, pulling bits out and letting them fall back down into the bowl.\u00a0\u00a0They were chatting away to each other (as much as 2.5 year olds do) throughout the activity and they were having a lovely time playing \u00a0together.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/craftykidsathome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/collage71.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"365\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They were both soon literally up to their elbows in shaving foam. I had a towel on standby ready for the big clean up operation.<\/p>\n<p>When they had both had enough (this was around the point they both started to throw the water-beads across the table and down onto the floor!) Bella took hold of the towel and started to clean up her friend\u2019s hands and arms .
