What is Remembrance Sunday or Veterans Day?
Remembrance Day is commemorated every year in the Commonwealth Nations on 11th November to mark the end of the First World War on 11th November 1918. It is referred to as Veterans Day in the US.
A poppy is traditionally worn around this time to show your respect and give thanks to the service men who served during these hostilities.
Remembrance Sunday takes place the second Sunday in November and special services are held at war memorials, with the laying of poppy wreaths and a two minute silence being observed at 11 am.
Why are poppies worn?
Poppies have been chosen as the symbol of remembrance after their inclusion in the famous war poem, “In Flanders Field,” which tells of poppies growing amidst the crosses at the battlefield at Flanders. There rich red colour has since been said to symbolise the blood spilt during the long war.
